Spanish Synagogue
About
The Spanish Synagogue in Prague is known as the most beautiful synagogue in Europe. The Spanish Synagogue - בית הכנסת הספרדי (Hebrew), Španělská synagoga (Czech), Spanische Synagoge (German) - is the newest synagogue in the area of the so-called Jewish Town, yet paradoxically, it was built at the place of the presumably oldest synagogue, Old School (also known as Altshul).
The Spanish Synagogue has a regular square plan with a large dome surmounting the central space. On three sides are galleries which open onto the nave. The remarkable interior decoration features a low stucco arabesque of stylised Islamic motifs which are also applied to the walls, doors and gallery balustrades. Restored in 1998, the Spanish Synagogue boast stunning golden and geometric decorations, with a domed ceiling, Islamic motifs and stained glass. Short video of the Spanish Synagogue on YouTube.
The Spanish Synagogue has become a popular venue for classical music.
During the winter the interior of the Spanish Synagogue is heated, but it is advisable to wear warm clothing for the concerts.
