Boccaccio Ballroom
A Neo-Baroque jewel of the golden 1920s — dinner shows and concerts in the Boccaccio Ballroom of Grand Hotel Bohemia, steps from the Municipal House.
The harmony of musical and culinary arts is served in the historically protected Neo-Baroque Boccaccio Ballroom of the Grand Hotel Bohemia on Královodvorská Street, right behind the Municipal House and the Powder Tower. Built in 1927, it immediately became one of the favourite meeting places of Prague high society — “soirées dansantes” were held here with famous guests such as Jan Masaryk, Minister for Foreign Affairs, or the US ambassador to the Czech Republic.
From the Golden Twenties to Today
The ballroom was given its name after Giovanni Boccaccio and his Decameron and is built in the Neo-Baroque style. In 1993 a thorough reconstruction brought back the best times of the Boccaccio: the artificial marble was restored, all wall decorations and paintings were recovered and newly gilded, the statues of little cupids, hanging musical instruments and arrows of love just under the ceiling were carefully reconstructed, and the mirrors and light fixtures were replaced. Despite the poor state before the reconstruction, the hall's original splendour has been saved.
A Ballroom of Details
Today you can admire the original parquet floor made of wooden cassettes, each consisting of nine different types of oriental wood. Time and thousands of dancing shoes made it so hard that it even survived the great flood of 2002, when it stood under the water of the Vltava for three days. The floor rests on a wooden grid that makes it slightly flexible for dancers' feet — so they don't hurt so much and you can stay for another drink.
The central chandelier also escaped damage: it was carefully taken down and each of its 4,000 hand-made pieces was cleaned and hung back, so you can admire its glittering beauty.
Come and enjoy a Mozart show and dinner in this beautiful ambience, closely associated with the history of Prague and only a few steps from the Estates Theatre, where Mozart enjoyed the triumphant success of his world-famous opera Don Giovanni. The event is suitable for children.
